World Football: Thirteen of the most expensive transfers in the history football – Part 4

4. Fernando Torres

Fernando José Torres Sanz is a Spanish football player who is currently giving his valuable services to English Premier League club Chelsea and the Spain national team. Nicknamed as El Niño, he is deployed as a striker on the pitch. A product of Atlético Madrid youth academy, Torres made his senior team debut in 2001.

The January transfer window of 2011 saw the Spaniard accept a £50 million offer of Chelsea FC and left the Anfield grounds on January 31, 2011. Although the 27-year-old is regarded as one of the best strikers in the football arena, but his mediocre performances at Chelsea grounds have labelled him as the most expensive transfer flops in history till now.

3. Kaka

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, or simply known as Kaka, is a professional football player from Brasília, Brazil. The 28-year-old plays for the Spanish La Liga club, Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team. He holds the position as an attacking mid-fielder in the team.

In 2009, Real Madrid paid £55 million to AC Milan for the brilliant player Kaka. He was signed in the hopes of reigniting the Galactico's era. While the Brazilian may have put some exceptional performances at el Madrid, it is hard to see him prove the worth of so much money.

2. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimović is a professional Swedish football player of Bosnian-Serb and Croatian descent. The 29-year-old is currently playing for Serie A club Milan and the Swedish national team. He is deployed as a striker in the team. Ibrahimović started his professional career as a footballer with Malmö FF.

In 2009, Ibrahimović was sold to Barcelona FC by Inter Milan for a transfer fee of £56.5 million. However, the spectacular player was not able to give his best at the Spanish side and in 2010 he was loaned to Milan – a club where he regained his best form. He might get a chance to prove his talents at the Blaugrana grounds again.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is a professional Portuguese footballer who is currently serving the Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team. An epitome of versatility, Ronaldo is deployed as a winger or a forward on the pitch.

The current captain of Portuguese national team happens to be the most expensive player in soccer history, having moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid, for a transfer deal worth £80 million in 2009. Ronaldo has given out some of the most scintillating performances at the Spanish club, creating an exhilarating score-record for himself in the country. Despite his brilliant form, the Portuguese should never have been worth the ridiculously huge sum of money.

It will be interesting to see what records are broken when the summer transfer window is completed. The price tags for some of the top players are phenomenal and only time will tell if these exorbitant amounts of money are worth it. The rich clubs will have no problems buying some of the top players during the transfer period, as the less financially strong teams will have to tap into young talent for any hope of competing with some of the top teams.
