Vera Zvonareva thrashes Caroline Wozniacki to clinch 2011 Qatar Ladies Open title

Seeded no. 2 at the 2011 Qatar Ladies Open, Vera Zvonareva of Russia annihilated World no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark to come out victorious at the tournament and take the Championship title.

Zvonareva got off to a good start, taking the first set 6-4 followed by a 6-4 win in the second set to bring a close to the final. 

"It's a special moment for me. I have so many fans here and it's an unbelievable feeling to come to Doha and win this tournament. It was a tough match and I had to play aggressive and go for my shots. Caroline is World no. 1 and playing very well. I was just fighting for every point and trying to go for my shots," said Vera.

Wozniacki was out to get her 14th title apart from wanting to clinch her second title within a week of picking up her last. The Dane got rid of Svetlana Kuznetsova in the championship final of the 2011 Dubai Open, however, Caroline failed to level herself with Zvonareva and lost out on the Qatar Open title

"I had a great few days but today it was Vera's day, I had my chances, but she really played well. I failed to convert several break points," stated the World no. 1.

Earlier, Wozniacki went head to head with Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, defeating her 6-1, 6-1 in the semi-finals of the tournament. Alongside, Zvonareva eliminated the no. 5 seed, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beating her 6-1, 2-6 and 6-4 to advance to the final.

Additionally, In the year 2008, Vera got through with China's Li Na, defeating her 3-6, 6-3 and 6-3 to reach the finals of the 2010 Qatar Ladies Open. Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova defeated Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 and 6-3 to face Zvonareva in the championship final. It was nevertheless, Sharapova who clinched the title upon beating Vera 6–1, 2–6, 6–0.

Furthermore, Zvonareva came to be the fourth Russian professional, amongst the likes of Maria Sharapova, Nadia Petrova and Anastasia Myskina, to clinch the Qatar Open title.
