  • Tottenham Hotspur versus Arsenal – Second half review: English Premier League (Part 2)

Tottenham went onto build on their solid start to the second half by creating another goal scoring opportunity against Arsenal in the 61st minute of the match. Aaron Lennon who was thrown into the fray at the half time whistle found space down the right hand side of Arsenal’s defense as Bacary Sagna was caught out of position. The English winger nipped into the penalty area but he failed to make the right decision and ended up surrendering the ball, following a weak squared pass towards Rafael Van der Vaart. Johan Djourou did well to read Lennon’s intentions as he intercepted his pass and cleared the ball away for the visiting side.

In the 64th minute, Arsenal embarked on a counter attack, following some lethargic play by Roman Pavlyuchenko. Younes Kaboul played the ball towards Thomas Huddlestone and the English midfielder slipped a sleek pass towards Pavlyuchenko. The Russian striker was caught in possession by Cesc Fabregas who launched it up field for Theo Walcott. The speedy Arsenal forward carried the ball into the penalty area but Michael Dawson did well to force the youngster into a mistake as the ball went out of play for a Tottenham goal kick.

In the 70th minute, Tottenham found their way back into the match. Aaron Lennon was sent rolling inside the Arsenal penalty area as he got to the ball before the on-rushing Wojciech Szczesny. The Gunners’ goalkeeper brought down the Englishman with his feet and the referee pointed towards a spot to signal a penalty kick in favour of Tottenham Hotspur.

Rafael Van der Vaart stepped up to take the penalty kick and the ex-Real Madrid man made no mistake from the spot as the score line reached 3-3.

Tottenham’s comeback from a two goal deficit gave them the confidence to pursue a winning goal in the end. However, Arsenal defended resolutely for the remainder of the second half. Despite the fact that Wenger introduced Andrey Arshavin and Nicklas Bendtner into the match in the 82nd minute, Arsenal was second best for much of the second half. Their lack of energy coupled with Tottenham’s enthusiastic approach to the match as a whole was enough to hold the title contenders to a draw at the end of the match.
