Tommy Gainey and Jeff Quinney grab first round lead at the Wyndham Championship on PGA Tour

Tommy Gainey and Jeff Quinney shot a magnificent seven-under, 63 on the opening day of the Wyndham Championship on PGA Tour, to grab a joint lead of the $5,200,000 event.

The duo, still in search for their first victory on the tour, played brilliantly throughout the day, to stay ahead of fast approaching Stuart Appleby by one shot. Although Gainey is safely into the FedExCup Playoffs next week, Quinney is striving to break into the Top-125 to qualify for the same.

“The only chance I get in the playoffs is probably winning this week, and coming with the attitude of `all-in,'” said Quinney. “Basically, just push all your chips in, and this is what I got. It's my last chance, and don't hold back, try to get out of my own way.”

Quinney posted a strong finish last year here at the scenic Sedgefield Country Club · Greensboro, but barely missed The Barclays being just outside the Top-125. He was poised at 126^th at that time. He is currently ranked 215^th and will surely be needing a victory to help himself get into the $10-million event.

Gainey, on the contrary, is safely inside the FedEXCup Playoffs with current ranking of 40^th. He shot five birdies and an eagle at par-five, 5^th without dropping a shot throughout the day.

While speaking after the day’s play, Gainey said, “Any time you play and shoot 63 ... when you have no blemishes on a golf course like this -- or any golf course, for that matter -- it's a good day.”

Quinney pulled in five straight birdies on his back nine to card a total of eight birdies but had to settle for a joint lead owing to a bogey at the final hole. Appleby, who shot to fame with his Long Putter adventure at the PGA Championship, posted a strong 64 on the opening day and will be hoping to soar up the leaderboard on the weekend.

Another ten players are tied for the fourth spot including Paul Casey, Carl Pettersson, Ernie Els, Jason Bohn, Jimmy Walker, Tim Heron, Lee Janzen, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh and George McNeill with their respective first round scores of five-under, 65.
