Sunderland’s defender Anton Ferdinand arrested by Police for failing to appear in court

Well fans from the Stadium of Light will certainly be disappointed whatever the development might be that led to the arrest of one of Sunderland’s favourite sons.

It was their prized defender Anton Ferdinand that got into trouble when he did not appear before court for a crime committed while driving.

It has been reported that currently the defender is being detained in Newcastle while sources have revealed that the reasons are the centre back’s actions committed some time earlier. They have been described as driving offences and they ultimately lead to a hearing.

The reasons for the absence from court have not been revealed yet, but the general speculation is that a player might be suffering from the classic celebrities-rule-all case at the time.

The 25 year old Ferdinand was brought to Sunderland in 2008 after he spent his earlier years with West Ham United. With the Black Cats the player has capped 66 times while at his former club Ferdinand made 163 appearances (starting from the season of 2003-04). He has also scored 5 goals while his performance for the Hammers and Black Cats has always led to praise. West Ham United is also where he started his junior career from.

Sources have revealed that Ferdinand is being convicted of using a mobile phone while driving. The offence was committed in July this year. He had been called up in front of a hearing that was being officiated by Newcastle magistrates this Monday. The magistrates were going to proceed with a sentence for him but now the London born has complicated matters furthermore.

Ferdinand also happens to be a former England under-21 international having participated in 21 fixtures. According to reports the defender gave himself over to the Police at Pilgrim Street and since then he is being retained in the Police Station.

Now the Sunderland player has been slapped with 9 points on his driving licence, and was facing a driving ban for the transgression he committed.

An official from Sunderland has commented on the issue saying that Ferdinand did not receive any notification of the request. He collaborated that he certainly was disappointed but wishes the player the best with hope that he will come out the troubling situation soon.

He also informed that the club was trying to play their part in the fiasco, “The club is liaising with Northumbria Police in order to resolve this quickly.”
