Stephen Fleming does not want to be discussed as potential India coach – Cricket news

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming does not want to be discussed as a potential India coach despite his name being circulated as the strongest candidate for the post left vacant by Gary Kirsten.

The Indian team is looking for a coach and Fleming has been shortlisted as the most suitable person for the position. The former Kiwi skipper is currently coaching the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings and is happy with his job with the Chennai players.

“I enjoy my relationship with all the Indian players and Dhoni is a special player I am involved with. He is a captain with free space. I have been working with Suresh Raina and others as well. Just about time that I do not want to be talked about as a potential Indian coach,” Fleming said.

The former Kiwi batsman holds great repute among cricketing circles. After leading Black Caps for almost a decade, Fleming did not break his relation with game. The classy left-hander was also offered to coach the New Zealand national team but Fleming tuned down the offer because of his personal commitments.

The Chennai Super Kings won the Indian Premier League in 2010 and went on to seal victory in the Champions League under Fleming’s judicious command.

On the other hand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is not ready to take any decision at its discretion without consulting India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. One of the biggest reasons of Fleming being considered as the strongest candidate for the post is his close relationship with the current India captain.

However, the former Kiwi skipper has earlier made it clear that he has not yet thought of taking over the responsibility of coaching internationally.

Responding to a question about his working relationship with India’s World Cup winning skipper, Fleming stated, “We just have a relationship where we the players are talked about behind the scenes. He is always free on the field and that gives us an edge.”

On Dhoni’s captaincy, Fleming described that the Indian wicketkeeper does not believe in much planning. He explained that Dhoni mostly trusts in making quick decisions after analysing the opponents and ground conditions.
