Sourabh Varma thrashes Wong Wing Ki to enter second round of Swiss Open GP Gold
The young Indian shuttler Sourabh Varma made his cut into second round by thrashing Wong Wing Ki in his opening match of the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold on March 13, 2012.
The Indian lad cleared his first hurdle by sealing a victory over his Hong Kong rival Wong Wing with tight but decisive figures 22-20, 20-22 and 21-19 on the score board.
The World Number 20 Men’s singles expert Wong Wing, despite of having an upper hand over low ranked Sourabh, could not end an epic one hour and eight minute tussle in his favour and crashed out of the tournament.
However, both contestants made the spectators gasp with their gutsy performances and this exhibition of court craft was applauded by both sections, the ordinary spectators and technical experts, of the audience.
The World Number 44 shuttler Sourabh Varma locked horns right from the opening set and kept his opponent Wong Wing in pressure with couple of good rallies.
The experienced player Wong Wing kept on stepping forward on the score cards but the final leap of Sourabh Varma on 22-20 score position left him far behind which cost him a crucial match point.
However, first set loss did not knock his spirit down and Wong Wing smacked his young rival in second game of the match.
The Hong Kong shuttler, who is turning 22 on March 18, equalled the balance of battle by snatching the second match point. He set up a survival of the fittest in the third set by registering the final score of 22-20 in second set.
The third set became a tough test of mental and physical fitness for both players as they were striving to stay away from an early exit. Both shuttlers sweat hard to avoid being bleeding chips and stayed close to each other on the score board.
The tussle finally ended when youngster Sourabh Varma sealed his 2-1 victory with a decisive score position of 21-19 in the final set.
This win took him in the second round where another challenge awaits him. He will be looking to surpass World Number 18 Korean shuttler Shon Wan Ho to earn a spot in the pre quarter-finals of Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2012.
