Shahid Afridi reveals doubts for Shoaib Akhtar’s inclusion in semi-final – ICC World Cup 2011
Pakistan skipper, Shahid Afridi, said today that pacer Shoaib Akhtar is trying hard to get fit for the much anticipated semi-final against India at Mohali. However, his inclusion in the game is doubtful.
"Shoaib is not 100 per cent (fit). He is trying his level best to play and we will decide on him in the evening," Afridi said.
Akhtar who played just three matches of the tournament, announced retirement from the international cricket almost a week before the Pakistan quarter-final against West Indies on 23rd of March at Shere Bangla National Stadium.
As the Mohali’s wet weather is thought to be more suitable for pacers, many of the cricket experts have stressed to include the “Rawalpindi Express” in the high profile semi-final against arch-rivals. Pakistan’s former fast bowler, Wasim Akram, insisted that the team management play Akhtar, saying that he proves dangerous for the Indian.
Another supporter was Umar Gul, who seconded Wasim’s idea saying that the pacer is experienced and is known for his marvellous bowling performance in India. Gul also added that Akhtar’s presence will take the pressure off him.
In addition, Pakistan’s legendry cricketer Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Misbah-ul-Haq, Rashid Latif and Moin Khan also suggested that Akhtar be included in the semi-final.
Afridi said that India will have to suffer more pressure compared to Pakistan during the match. The captain also said that there is no doubt India is the favrourite for this competition but Pakistan have given a performance beyond expectations and the team is enjoying their play. "If you know how to handle it, there is no need to panic. I think we will enjoy playing here," Afridi said.
Afridi who claimed 21 wickets in the ongoing tournament said that the match is very important for both teams and his squad has prepared well and are confident. He asserted that the semi-final would be a competition between Pakistan’s attacking bowling and India’s remarkable batting-line up. The captain also added that leading Pakistan as a captain in the final is an honour for him.
The semi-final will be the first encounter between India and Pakistan in the ongoing tournament and fireworks are expected.
