  • Serie A match report: AS Roma 4-0 Inter Milan

Fabio Borini’s brace and a goal each from Juan and Bojan Krkic sink the Nerazzurri to an embarrassing defeat at the Stadio Olimpico Rome.

Impressive AS Roma thrashed Inter Milan 4-0 at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Sunday, February 5.

Juan opened the scoring for the hosts, while Borini doubled their advantage before the half-time whistle. The former Chelsea star scored his second goal moments after the break, and Bojan Krkic added the final nail in Inter’s coffin with a wonderful solo goal in the dying minutes of the match.

The game had to be delayed by one day due to unplayable conditions. Luis Enrique’s side needed to get back to winning ways after their embarrassing defeat at the hands of Cagliari in the last round of matches.

Roma were without several of their key personnel, but Daniele De Rossi made a welcome return to the starting line-up after recovering from a groin injury.

On the other hand, Inter were also without a few of few of their key players. Wesley Sneijder and Ricky Alvarez did not travel with the squad after injuring themselves in the recent games.

The hosts had the first sight on goal, as Borini made a lovely run in the box before drifting his shot wide of Julio Cesar’s near post in the 5th minute. The Giallorossi built on an impressive start by taking the lead in the 13th minute. Juan exploited a lapse in Inter’s defence, as he rose unmarked to meet Totti’s beautiful cross from the corner to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

Roma continued the early domination, with Borini being a continuous menace for Inter; whereas Inter were finding it increasingly difficult to make any significant inroads in the Roma half.

Another chance went begging for Luis Enrique’s side in the 27th minute, when Francesco Totti and Jose Angel’s lovely exchange of passes led to an opening, but only for the Giallorossi skipper to roll the ball out for a goal-kick.

Borini was becoming a continuous nuisance for the Inter back four, as he jumped highest to head a cross from the left, but the ball whistled over the crossbar.

However, the former Swansea star’s hard-work paid off, as he doubled his team’s advantage in the 41st minute. Miralem Pjanic played a lovely through ball to the striker, who still had a lot to do, as he turned Walter Samuel one way then the other, before slotting the ball past Cesar to make it 2-0.

La Maggica went into the break with their heads held high, while the visitors hoped for a better second-half.

Borini continued to haunt the opposition, as he scored his second and Roma’s third goal of the evening five minutes after resumption. The 20-year-old beat the offside trap to meet a long ball from Juan before slotting his shot past Cesar to make it 3-0 in the 49th minute.

A long evening beckoned for the Nerazzurri, who looked completely down and out. Claudio Ranieri’s men looked out of sorts, as they failed to test the Giallorossi goalkeeper throughout the match.

To add salt to the wounds of the visitors, Bojan Krkic scored the fourth goal for Roma in the dying minutes of the game. The former Barcelona star wriggled away past three Inter defenders before slotting a shot into the bottom left-corner of the net to make it 4-0.

The Wolves cruised to an easy win, and the delight of the fans was doubled when the club later announced that talismanic midfielder, Daniele De Rossi, has agreed an extension to his contract.

Roma will complete their game against Catania on February 7, which was abandoned due to heavy snow last month. On the other hand, La Beneamata will take on Novara in their next match.
