Rory McIlroy is trying to be the world No. 1 by winning the Honda Classic or Cadillac Championship
Rory McIlroy is in the field of the Honda Classic and WGC-Cadillac Championship, positively looking forward to claiming the world No. 1 position by winning a title.
The 22-year-old Northern Irish professional is one of the hot favourites for the top position. Currently, Luke Donald is the world No. 1, but he is facing tough challenges from the youngest star.
Donald was eliminated by Ernie Els in the first round and now seems to be losing hope to maintain his top ranking position.
McIlroy is chasing him at a faster pace and there are ample chances for him to snatch Donald’s rank in the upcoming tournament.
McIlroy lost a good chance to become the No. 1 at the Accenture Match Play Championship on February 26.
He finished the World Golf Championship event on a runner-up position. The loss became the reason and halted his progress.
He played tremendously throughout the six-day event and successfully faced Hunter Mahan in the final round. He lost the tournament by 2&1 scores and Mahan won surprisingly.
“After Luke departed early … the goal this week to try and get through as many rounds as possible, and give myself a chance to get to No.1 in the world,” McIlroy said
He went on to say, “And I've given myself that chance this afternoon and hopefully I can take it”.
After losing the mega event, McIlroy is focusing more on the Honda Classic title, at PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
“I've got two events coming up, the Honda and Doral, you know, I just you want to keep putting good results up on the board, try to get a few wins,” McIlroy said.
“And if I can do that then ultimately get into the top of the World Rankings is hopefully inevitable, if I keep playing golf the way I am at the minute,” he concluded.
Soon after the Honda Classic, the WGC-Cadillac Championship is scheduled from March 8. McIlroy will be playing both the tournaments and there are ample chances for him to record a victory.
If he wins, he will definitely be claiming the top position at the Official World Golf Rankings.
The young rising star is poised to defeat Donald for the first time in the upcoming two mega tournaments of the PGA.
