Robin Soderling among Wimbledon day two winners
Robin Soderling has followed fellow French Open finalist Rafael Nadal into the second round at Wimbledon with a straight sets win over the USA’s Robby Ginepri.
The Swede took just one hour and 18 minutes to wrap up the 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory as he smacked down 13 aces and 45 winners to his opponent’s five aces and 13 winners for the match.
While the sixth seed progresses, 24th seed Marcos Baghdatis has fallen at the first hurdle, defeated in four sets by Lukas Lacko on court five.
Joining the Cypriot on the sidelines is James Blake, who is currently battling knee problems which may bring his career to an end sooner than the American had planned.
“If it's continuing to play in pain, I'll reassess [whether to play on] after the [US] Open and see if I want to continue that,“ Blake said post-match today. “If I need to, after the Open, take the rest of the year off and then see if I can start fresh in 2011.”
“It's a bit of an unknown. A lot of people think the unknown is fun. Some people think it's scary. I think it's a little bit of both.”
There was better news for Aegon Championships champion Sam Querrey on day two however, with the 18th seed progressing in straight sets, as did 26th seed Gilles Simon, while Mikhail Youzhny took four sets to win through to the second round against Dudi Sela.
World No. 1 Nadal cruised through his opening match on centre court, and it was similarly easy going for Andy Murray on the No. 1 court against Jan Hajek.
