The Die Knappen striker has shown his gratitude to fans after the amazing farewell in the home game against Hertha Berlin.
The former Real Madrid striker played his last home game for Die Knappen on Saturday, April 28, when Schalke downed Hertha Berlin with a 4-0 scoreline. The striker scored his side’s third goal whereas Klaas-Jan Huntelaar bagged
a brace and Lewis Holtby found the net once.
Raul expressed his gratitude towards the fans and admitted that he has had a great two years at the club. The player had revealed last week that he will not sign an extension to his current contract and will leave the Royal Blues
at the end of the season.
The former Real Madrid attacker claimed that the Schalke fans are the best supporters in the world. He insisted that the fans are always behind the players and support them through thick and thin.
“Schalke are a very special club. There are three or four thousand travelling fans at every away game. That's exceptional. And the home games are always sold out as a matter of course,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to
the club’s official website.
Raul added that he has no words to express his gratefulness to the fans as he has two of the best years in Germany. The striker also expressed his delight on securing a third place finish on the Bundesliga table to qualify for
the UEFA Champions League next season.
The player claimed that it is a brilliant achievement for the side as they have played well this term.
“I can't find the words to express my gratitude for the many wonderful moments. In footballing and financial terms that's very important for the club. I'm now going to celebrate a little with my family and friends. Third place
is a super outcome. To have played for Schalke has been so much fun,” he concluded.
Raul has thus far played 65 league games for Schalke in total and has scored 28 times in the process. The player inspired the side to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League last term and played a vital part in Die Knappen’s
DFB-Pokal triumph last season.
