Ramnaresh Sarwan included in West Indies ODI squad – Cricket News Update
West Indies has drafted middle-order batsman, Ramnaresh Sarwan, in the 15-man ODI squad for their upcoming tour of Australia, bringing an end to the player’s 18-month exile from the national team setup.
Sarwan publically criticised the WICB and especially current coach, Ottis Gibson, for negative treatment, which had a direct affect on his performances.
"The coach said some negative stuff that hurt me mentally and emotionally," Sarwan told BBC Sport in May last year. "Mentally I was broken down, not from the stress of playing, it's just certain individuals have drained me mentally. It took a toll on my
confidence and the way I play. Everything went away. "
Gibson dismissed Sarwan’s claims in an interview with Trinidad Express. "Never once in my three years here have I had an issue with Sarwan. I was very disappointed to hear the stuff that Sarwan said because I don't know where there was an issue."
The player then subsequently filed an appeal with the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), and after a thorough review into the case, he was rewarded $161,000 in damages in September last year.
Period outside the national team allowed him to focus on his batting as he signed for Leicestershire in the English domestic circuit. The union remained productive as Sarwan notched up 294 ODI and 941 first-class runs at 36.75 and 40.91 respectively.
As for the rest of the combination, the major omission comes in the shape of Marlon Samuels after the inform player suffered a facial injury during the ongoing Big Bash League. He has been replaced by all-rounder, Narsingh Deonarine, who makes a return to
the ODI side for the first time since June 2010.
The team will be led by Darren Sammy, and further welcomes back vice-captain, Dwayne Bravo, who has not played for the national team since picking up an injury in October last year.
The tour includes five limited-overs games, along with a solitary Twenty International. The tourists will begin their preparation with a warm-up match on January 29.
