The Senegal international has recently terminated his contract with German Bundesliga side HSV Hamburg and could be set to make a return to Ligue 1 football
For several days, Olympique de Marseille sporting director, Jose Anigo is a busy man. Anigo has already reassured the club’s fans that there will be no player exodus this summer and confirmed that the club’s ambitions are still as lofty
as they used to be.
Shrouded in financial doubts, Les Phoceens know that they must sell before they buy new players for next season. This summer, the club’s recruitment strategy is different from the transfer markets of yesteryears.
Marseille are eying experienced players to strengthen the squad and are also on the lookout for good bargains. Reports in French media now claim that the Rhone side have recently contacted Senegal international Mickael Tavares – a free agent since leaving
German Bundesliga side HSV Hamburg.
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder started out in the Ligue 1 with Nancy, Nantes and Tours before making a name for himself at Slavia Prague.
The 2007/2008 Champions League season was the stage where the player raised his profile during his side’s encounters with the likes of Ajax Amsterdam and Arsenal. During the same season, Tavares had become an integral part of the Senegal national side.
Two years later, he joined Hamburg who had been following him for a long time. The Villeneuve-Saint Georges-born player made a fairy tale start to his career with Hamburg but after six months, his journey turned into a nightmare.
Two successive loan spells at Nuremberg and Middlesbrough (English Championship) followed and now, the player has decided to terminate his contract with HSV.
At the age of 29, the now former Hamburg man is hungry for revenge and is desperate to find a club where he can return to his past best. After several chaotic seasons, huge wages are the last thing on Tavares’ mind which favours Olympique de Marseille.
Furthermore, Tavares is keen to play in Europe and Les Phoceens can offer him that as they will play in the Europa League next season. OGC Nice and Montpellier Herault are also interested in the player so Marseille need to speed things up.
