Number one draft pick Andrew Luck wants to start right away - NFL News
Andrew Luck being the number one draft pick this year will most likely be going to Indianapolis Colts whose poor 2-14 season has given them the number one draft pick, and Luck believes that he is good enough to start for the National Football League franchise
"I think every competitor wants to play, every down, every play," Luck said when asked about starting as an NFL rookie. "So, of course, who wouldn't want to start?"
The Colts boast one of the greatest talents and players to ever grace the NFL in quarterback Peyton Manning but his injury problems this year led the Colts to implode in the 2011 regular season.
Manning has still not completely recovered and his health issues have put a big question mark on his future with Indianapolis.
There is also the problem of Manning’s contract, with Colts owing their legendary quarterback a $28 million bonus or if they don’t pay risk losing him to free agency to any other NFL franchise.
Luck meanwhile says that it would be an honour to play with a legend of the calibre of Peyton Manning and to learn from such a big NFL great would be a tremendous opportunity.
"I think to have an opportunity to play with a guy like Peyton Manning would be great," he said.
It remains to be seen what Indianapolis decides. With a new coach and general manager in the front office the Colts could decide to go for a complete makeover by releasing Manning and going with Luck or they could keep both and let them fight it out to start
Those questions however, will be answered in the future. For now Luck will come to Indianapolis for the annual scouting combine where he will battle it out with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III for the number one draft pick slot.
The Stanford graduate himself is looking forward to the combine and show the many scouts present what he is capable of.
“I've got the combine, that's what's important to me right now. The combine, the draft, the pro day before that, that's what I'm focusing on."
The Colts will not want a repeat of this season again in 2012 or for a long time and they have a readymade replacement for Manning in Luck, it all depends now on what Jim Irsay decides with two big talents at his disposal.
