Manchester United make history, win record 19th English Premier League title

Manchester United faced Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men only needed one point to win the record 19th title. In the end, a penalty converted by Wayne Rooney, which neutralised an earlier goal scored by the home side, gave the Red Devils the record title in the English Premier League of the ongoing 2010-11 season.

The reign of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford has been great for United’s legacy. As the Red Devils kept on piling up League titles after titles, Liverpool could not produce even a single victory. Now with the 19th title, United have surpassed Liverpool as the most successful club in England’s history. The title has not come easy for Manchester United as they faced many problems and hardships over the 2010-11 season. Nevertheless, some poor performances by the clubs around them have really helped them in clinching it with a match in hand.

At the beginning of the season, Manchester United were not in the picture as Chelsea started their campaign on song. However, with a series of bad performances, Manchester United were able to surpass the leaders. At that time, Manchester United faced many problems in away matches and many precious points were dropped in relatively easy games. Arsenal and Manchester City had many opportunities to take away the first spot from the leaders but both the clubs slipped up at important occasions. Therefore, as United took the top spot at the end of last year, they kept their cool to retain it until the end of the season.

The success of United must be mainly credited to their exceptional defence. Nemanja Vidic has been in phenomenal form and must be acknowledged for conceding only 35 goals in the entire campaign. Along with Vidic, Edwin van der Sar has also been in great form despite his near-retirement age. However, the great Dutchman did not show any signs of aging and he remained one of the topmost goalkeepers in the League.

In the attack, Dimitar Berbatov leads the League standings as the top goal scorer. However, inconsistency has remained his problem and he was unable to score on frequent basis. A four-goal haul and a couple of hat-tricks had a lot of contribution in total 21 goals scored by the Bulgaria international.

On the other hand, Javier Hernandez has proved to be a sensational player. The Mexican forward found important goals and turned out to be a real match winner for his side. In the second half of the season, Wayne Rooney got back to his normal self and United really started looking like a formidable side.

Despite all these contributions, it remained the season of Ryan Giggs who kept on creating goals for his side. Luis Nani and Antonio Valencia also played well but the latter missed a lot of action because of injuries.

At the beginning of the season, what looked like an average side turned out to be a real deal in the end. Manchester United are also going to feature in the Champions League final where they will meet Barcelona.

Sir Alex Ferguson has proven once again that players do not matter as long as they follow the tactics that are being taught to them. In this regard, Ferguson has surpassed all the managers in contemporary football with yet another title without many in-form exceptional players in his side. Once again, it is a victory for Ferguson who has single-handedly broken Liverpool’s dominance in England.

As United break the record, Liverpool are also looking to improve their squad. Kenny Dalglish has been given the job permanently and the Reds look stronger than their previous couple of seasons. Next season would be interesting as for the first time in the history of English Premier League, the top six teams will battle it out for the title.
