Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic wary of Chelsea threat in UEFA Champions League

Manchester United skipper and defender Nemanja Vidic has refused to rule out Fernando Torres’ threat when the two sides meet in the first of the two-legged UEFA Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, 6 April, 2011.

Vidic believes that despite the Spaniard not being in the best of forms, he can still ruin any opposition on his day. The Chelsea strike force has not been so lethal since January 2011, as the way they were at the start of the season but Vidic demands respect for the Blues strikers from his team.

Vidic said, “We have respect, obviously, for their attacking players. It doesn't matter if they didn't score a goal. They will try to score and they will give their best. This is two games and, at the end of the day, it's most important who will go through and not who will score the goals.”

United’s defence was given a tough time by West Ham United over the weekend, as the Hammers scored two goals in the opening 25 minutes and second half heroics from Wayne Rooney came to United’s rescue as they went on to win 4-2 in the end.

The Serbian added that his team should tighten their defence if they want to hold any chance of beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

“The defending part, we need to improve a bit more and we'll be all right. Of course, it's much better when you win the game and go to the next Champions League game. But I don't think our concentration [for Chelsea] will be different,” Vidic added.

Despite the recent meetings between the two sides indicating Chelsea as favourites to win the tie, Vidic believes that this game will be totally different to the recent League matches. He added that playing in Champions League is much different to the League competitions.

The 29-year-old added that his team knows the importance of scoring an away goal at Stamford Bridge and they will not sit back and relax. Vidic expects a very entertaining battle as he thinks that both teams have the experience to match each other.
