LOSC Lille star Gervinho hints at Lille stay despite Arsenal link – Ligue 1 news
Reports in France suggest that Ivory Coast international, Gervinho, currently on the books of Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille, might stay at the club despite being heavily linked with a move to English Premier League side Arsenal.
While talking to the media, the 24-year-old said that although he is yet to make a decision on his future at the club, he might be more inclined on staying with the outfit for one more season.
"Everything is still possible. We just won two trophies with Lille and will play Champions League football next year. The club are working on a very exciting project that is interesting for many people. I could convince players to stay here," the tricky
media was quoted saying while giving an interview to L’Equipe.
The former Le Mans player’s contract at the club would expire in the summer of 2012. However, Gervinho has now said that either he will move on to a new club or he will sign a new contract with the club.
"There is always a choice. Do I want to stay or should I leave? I still have a one-year contract and we are currently in talks. One thing is sure though: I will sign a contract extension or the club will sell me," said the 24-year-old.
Rumours suggest that Arsenal are readying a 17 million Euros offer to Lille for the services of Gervinho. In the 2010/11 season, the Ivorian was in sublime form for Lille as the club recorded its first ever domestic double in 65 years. Since joining Lille
from Le Mans, Gervinho has made 54 appearances and has scored 25 goals.
In May 2008, it was reported that Arsenal had made inquiries about Gervinho’s availability but Lille managed to keep hold of the-then unproven youngster. However, it seems that Lille might find it hard to keep hold of their star player as his profile in
Europe is becoming stronger each day. Furthermore, an offer of 17 million Euros might tempt Lille into letting Gervinho leave. The funds obtained would be used to purchase a few more players in the summer transfer window in order to make a stronger squad ahead
of the next season, where the club would also participate in the UEFA Champions League.
