Johnny Miller believes Olympic Golf Course is too good for Phil Mickelson to land the coveted US Open title
As the season approaches the second major event on the PGA Tour, the star-studded US Open at the scenic Olympic Golf Club, one man will yet again be in question for his anticipated performance in the event.
The left-handed giant on the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson, who has gone over to win no fewer than four major titles in his glistening career, has never won his home title, the US Open in his countless attempts.
In fact, Mickelson is considered as one of the most unfortunate PGA Tour players who has five runners up finishes in the event but was never able to bag the title on the Sunday.
Johnny Miller, one of the renowned NBC sports journalist and a former PGA Tour player, reckons that Mickelson needs to concentrate on his swing and must bring an end to his wayward drives if he ever wants to win the title.
He said, “The factor has been his driver. He has almost won the Open despite his crazy driving of the ball. If he would have driven the ball well in any one of those five runner-ups, he would have won at least one Open. You remember at Winged Foot, he hit
like three fairways the whole last round and almost won the dang thing. The guy’s like a magician”.
Miller, who won the US Open in 1973, is known as the wizard of the sprawling Olympic Golf Club where he has spent almost half his life playing the course.
He believes that unlike Congressional Country Club last year, which proved rather docile for the field, Olympic Golf Club will be one of the hardest to drive on in the event.
Miller insists that the course requires precision on the drives and Mickelson may find it troublesome to tackle the course.
He added, “Olympic is a precision course. So, he’s going to have to change his aggressive style of play and make it fit Olympic Club, otherwise, he won’t have a chance of contending”.
Some top-60 players from the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) will be part of the field at the star-studded event scheduled in almost three week’s time.
