IPL5: Chennai Super Kings edge past Deccan Chargers to take fourth spot – Cricket News Update
Chennai Super Kings held their nerves to clinch a 10-run win over Deccan Chargers in the 46th game of Indian Premier League (IPL5) played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk on Friday, May 4, 2012.
With the win, CSK reclaimed the number four spot that Kings XI Punjab took after the thrashing Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday.
Chennai set a competitive target of 161 runs for Chargers to win the match. However, despite the resilient innings of Cameron White (77) and Shikhar Dhawan (36) the tourists ended 10 runs short of the required total.
Kumar Sangakkara, skipper Chargers, was not impressed with his side’s performance. The Sri Lankan international blamed Deccan Chargers' poor fielding for the defeat.
The left-hander reckons that the difference between the two sides was fielding; Chennai got crucial run-outs while Chargers drop dollies.
Sangakkara said, “We need to get our basics right. We have dropped far too many catches to win the close games. We batted and bowled well, especially to restrict CSK to 160. Brilliant fielding by Chennai.”
The winning captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was not too happy with his side as well. The wicket-keeper batsman wants his batters to make the most of death-overs, as scoring quick runs in last few overs is something they are lagging
behind when compared to other top sides in the tournament.
He said, “We have to capitalise in the last overs which we have not been able to do. If you bowl well and finish well, you will more often than not win the game.”
Dhoni also wants his new-ball bowlers to go for the kill and take early wickets.
“Bollinger is bowling well in the nets, but he is bowling a lot of no-balls. Hilfenhaus started off really well, but leaked a few runs at the end. Need a genuine fast bowler who can pick wickets in the first six overs,” said the
A tough task lies ahead for Chennai, as they’ll face Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in their next IPL fixture. The match will take place on Sunday, May 6. Deccan, on the same day, faces Royal Challengers Bangalore at M Chinnaswamy
