Cricket Bulletin - Round up of the ICC World Cricket League Division Five - Part 2 of 2 - 19th February 2012 - continued
Singapore vs. Guernsey:
Singapore outclassed Guernsey by 78 runs on the second day of the ICC World Cricket League Division Five, being played at the Indian Association Ground, February 19, 2012.
Singapore, while batting first, faced an early blow when Chaminda Kumarage (0) fell on the sixth ball of the match. The opener was caught on the bowling off right-arm pacer, Jamie Nussbaumer.
Following the early setback, the hosts grabbed hold of the game through Chetan Suryawanshi and Buddika Mendis’ impressive 88-run second-wicket partnership. Their stand ended on 92 when off-break bowler, Gary Rich, picked up Suryawanshi (44).
Another useful partnership of 72 runs between Mendis and Anish Param further aided the home side, and by the end of the 39th over, the score had reached 164 for 3. However, it was all downhill after that as none of the last six batters managed to reach double figures, and the Singapore side folded on a disappointing, yet healthy, 223.
Nussbaumer and Stuart Bisson were the pick of the bowler, claiming 3 scalps each, while David Hooper stood the most economical bowlers with figures of 10-0-38-2.
In reply, Guernsey failed to counter the new ball and lost their first wicket on the score of 6 when opener, Ross Kneller, was sent back by Amjad Mahboob.
The Singapore bowlers kept the batting side tied down, giving them no room to play their attacking shots. The pressure led to the second breakthrough, when GH Smit’s highly ineffective knock, where he scored 18 off 59 balls, was brought to an end by Shoaib Razzaq.
Following the dismissals of the openers, the batting side went further under the cosh and lost two more wickets.
Guernsey was reeling at 67 for 4, before the no.3 batsman Jeremy Frith started to increase the scoring rate, playing an outstanding knock of 76.
While the half-centurion stood tall at one end, the other batsman failed to support him, as the whole team was bowled-out for 145 in 43.4 overs.
Shoaib Razzak and Saad Janjua finished with three wickets each, guiding their team to a comprehensive win.
Buddika Mendis (Singapore), for his outstanding knock of 76, was declared the player of the match.
