Francesco Totti to leave Roma?

If the latest reports coming out of Italy are to be believed, Francesco Totti’s relationship with his club is at an all time low.

For starters, Francesco Totti is considered the best player in the club’s history. Nicknamed ‘Er Pupone’ by the Giallorossi faithful, Totti is one of the very few one-club men remaining in world football. Ever since the Lupi legend made his debut for Giallorossi in 1992, he has been a mainstay in the Giallorossi attack.

Tipped by many as the best Italian player of his generation, Totti’s form, along with his fitness has gone down in recent years. Worse still, the arrival of Marco Borriello from AC Milan and Jeremy Menez coming of age, first team opportunities have been hard to come by.

Totti, who has a history of throwing tantrums, has not taken the change too well. Earlier in the season, the skipper was blasted by media and fans alike, after Totti reacted negatively upon beings substituted during a crunch game against Inter. His frequent contract rows with the club are no secret either.

On Sunday against Sampdoria, Totti was given only four minutes to impress despite Giallorossi trailing 2–1. The latest snub is likely to be the last straw. Totti is currently in Monaco with his family, taking time off from football and making up his mind regarding his future at the club. The legendary no. 10 even cancelled a show on Italian TV. Upon his return, the Roma fan-favourite is likely to demand make-or-break talks with the club hierarchy. Even though the player has a multimillion dollar contract – Totti is the highest paid player in Giallorossi roster – that runs into 2014, first team football assurance is what he needs.

With the player past his prime, it’s unlikely that the former Italy international will be assured of a starting place. Under such conditions, Totti might be forced to leave the club. The Roma legend has frequently stated that he will never play for any other Italian team – owing much to his love for Roma. A move to the Spanish La Liga or Major League Soccer is on the cards. Francesco Totti frequently visits Miami to spend his holidays, and a switch to the United States cannot be entirely discounted.
