English Premier League transfer rumours (July 10th)
They say in life that you should never go back, but new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson looks set to see if Peter Crouch believes in that theory, as the Reds boss readies a £6million offer for the giant England forward.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Crouch, 29, spent three years at Anfield between 2005 and 2008, where he was a fans’ favourite, and Hodgson – who tried to sign the striker for Fulham last summer – is reportedly looking at reuniting the hitman with his former club, a prospect that could become a reality should Spurs snap up Crouch’s old Reds team-mate Craig Bellamy from Manchester City, or either of the Uruguayan World Cup strikers Diego Forlán and Edinson Cavani.
Back at Liverpool, Hodgson is also looking at Juventus’ French international forward David Trezeguet, and could make a shock move for free agent Paul Scharner, the versatile 30-year-old whose contract with Wigan has expired. Aston Villa and Sunderland are keen on the Austrian as well, with Villa also on the verge of signing former Reds left back Fabio Aurelio and striker Robbie Keane, and Sunderland readying an ambitious £7million move for Manchester United’s Michael Carrick.
While Scharner eyes the Anfield entrance, Javier Mascherano’s eyes are still firmly on the exit door, with the wantaway Argentina captain able to choose between Barcelona and Inter Milan as his next destination, but unlike him, Barça officials are at the World Cup final, where they’ll once again try to twist Arséne Wenger’s arm over the seemingly inevitable, and endless, transfer of Cesc Fàbregas.
Chelsea want Porto’s Bruno Alves to replace his partner at the heart of the Portugal defence, the Inter Milan-bound Ricardo Carvalho, while their former midfielder Joe Cole still hasn’t gone anywhere. Yet.
