England boss Fabio Capello gets the backing of Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher
England’s national team manager, Fabio Capello, has been backed by Liverpool duo of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher over the captaincy row. Capello became the centre of criticism after he ripped Rio Ferdinand from the captaincy role and reinstated John
Terry as England captain. The move was made just before their Euro 2012 qualifying game against Wales, played on Saturday, the 26 of March at Cardiff. The Three Lions won the game by a 2-0 margin, courtesy, Frank Lampard and Darren Bent goals.
Liverpool captain and midfielder, Steven Gerrard, mentioned that the squad and fans all have to look forward to upcoming matches, especially after the win. He stated that, victory over Wales was proof of the decision made by Capello. The midfielder further
mentioned that the manager did consult him before making the big decision and what he did is a part of his job. "I did actually get a call. The manager spoke to me. He spoke to me and just explained what he'd been doing; he didn't have to, the manager's paid
to make big decisions and he's made the decision and I think we all have to respect it and move on."
The Liverpool captain was pleased at the appointment of Terry as captain. He was also sympathetic towards Rio Ferdinand, mentioning that the Manchester United man did not do much wrong but these are managerial decisions which we all need to respect.
Gerrard’s team mate, Jamie Carragher, has also offered his support to Fabio Capello but added that the matter could have been resolved in a much more systematic manner. He did mention that captaining England is an honour and wished John Terry with all the
success in the coming future.
Carragher further stated that, "I think we'd all look at it and think it could have been handled a bit better." I think captaining England is a massive thing. It's a huge honour to be captain of England. For me I think John Terry's a great captain, has been
a great captain and will be a great captain and if Capello thinks that's right for England then he's got to do it, no matter how much criticism he gets.”
England, after defeating Wales in a Euro 2012 qualifier will now take on Ghana in friendly fixture on Tuesday, the 29 of March.
