Cricket Update: Clydesdale Bank 40- Peter Trego rockets Somerset to 249 run win
Peter Trego’s career-best 147 and a blazing unbeaten 90 from Jos Butler bagged Somerset a home semi-final tie at Taunton next Saturday, where they will face off Group B’s No 2, Essex Eagles.
The final Group A clash of the Clydesdale Bank 40 saw Somerset crushing Glamorgan with a record-breaking 249-run defeat at the County Ground, Taunton on Saturday, 4th of September. Chasing Somerset’s daunting total of 368 runs amassed in allotted 40 overs, the whole team of Glamorgan was bundled out in the 24th over with only 119 on the board.
Peter Trego's whirlwind 147 off just 89 balls and a blistering 33-ball 90 not out logged by wicketkeeper batsman Jos Buttler helped Somerset to set an intimidating total of 368 for 4 from 40 overs. During two hours entertaining stay at the crease, Trego pulled the ball through the boundary lines for no less than 24 times hitting 19 muscular fours and five well timed sixes. Jos Butler’s pugnacious innings of 90 runs saw him looting eight fours and seven muscular shots over the ropes for huge sixes.
Whirlwind knocks of Peter Trego and keeper Jos Buttler were well complimented by James Hildreth’s unbeaten 58 that he logged through 59 balls hitting four boundaries. Bludgeoning Zander de Bruyn joined his teammates in the mauling of Glamorgan bowlers looting four boundaries and a six during his 27 minutes stay at crease that earned him 33 runs from 30 balls.
Will Owen finished with 3 for 69 from 8 overs, while Dean Cosker took one wicket. David Harrison was the most expensive bowler in Glamorgan’s armoury as the eight overs bowled by him cost exactly 100, while Cosker was the most economical bowler conceding only 30 runs in his quota of 8 overs.
In reply, Glamorgan was rolled over for only 119 in the 24th over. Ben Wright top-scored with 36 off 34, while rest of the cast failed to get past 20 even. Ben Phillips four-wicket haul was the pick of Somerset’s bowling followed by Murali Kartik who finished with 3 for 23.
Marcus Trescothick, skipper of Somerset County, opted to bat first after winning the toss. The opening pair of Somerset featuring skipper Trescothick himself and Peter Trego shared an opening stand of 48 runs from five overs. The skipper departed on the first ball of sixth over slashing Will Owen to Gareth Rees. Trescothick scored 22 runs from 18 balls hitting four beautiful shots through the ropes.
After Trescothick’s dismissal, Nick Compton joined Trego to share a 14-run stand for the third wicket. Owen struck back in his next over having Compton caught by Mark Wallace behind the stumps. Compton’s 10 minutes stay at crease earned Somerset only 6 runs from 12 balls.
Zander de Bruyn and Peter Trego shared a 61-run stand for the third wicket partnership bringing 100 up for the side. That became 123 for three, when de Bruyn departed in the 16th over mistiming Cosker to Maynard.
James Hildreth and Peter Trego posted 128 runs to the scorecard for the fourth wicket partnership before fluent Trego was caught by Wright off Owen. He earned Somerset pugnacious 147 from just 89 balls. An un-beaten 117-run stand between Hildreth and Buttler took the side to a competitive total of 368 for 4.
In reply, only Ben Wright resisted, scoring 36 runs from 34 balls hitting for fours and one six while rest of the line-up floundered against Ben Phillips and Murali Kartik. The side batted like a team with no chance and a succession of immature shots saw them wrapped up inside 24 overs with 119 on the board. The whole batting line up of Glamorgan, except Ben Wright, succumbed for scores below 20. Six of the batsmen failed to get past even single digit scores.
Ben Phillips claimed four scalps from six overs followed by Murali Kartik, who finished with 3 for 23 from 5.3 overs. Zander de Bruyn followed his half century with 2 for 34 from his spell of four overs. Three overs baowled by Alfonso Thomas conceded only nine runs claiming opener Gareth Rees’ wicket as well.
