Carling Cup Match Analysis: Arsenal vs. Wigan Athletic – Arsenal stroll into semis (Part 5)
The match finally came to a close with Arsenal easily strolling past Wigan by a score line of two goals to nil. However how the team failed to score more than two still remains a mystery. Nevertheless while Arsenal were leaving the Emirates Stadium; in the
other game of the night, Manchester United who were the reigning holders of the cup were knocked out of the tournament by an inspired West Ham, who hammered four goals past United.
With West Ham and Arsenal being the only two big teams in the tournament it seems the cards are set as Arsenal might just put an end to their trophy drought by lifting the Carling Cup if they can maintain this same form for the reaming two fixtures.
The two players who stood out for in the game for Arsenal were Carlos Vela and Robin Van Persie. Vela who was the man of the hour for all the wrong reasons prior to the match, seemed to get his head straight in the game and his influence and contributions
in the match were vital to Arsenal performing as good as they did.
On the other hand Van Persie who has seen quite some time on the Arsenal bench over the last couple of weeks, came into his own in the game he was ever present and part of every single attack that the team were launching. Apart from that the Dutch man was
also playing some very creative and unique passes and appeared to be opting to play a brilliant flick once too often. However whatever he was doing seemed to work as he left the Wigan defenders for dead on countless occasions.
Wenger will be looking for the players to turn up in the same form once again and will also be expecting the rest of the team to perform just as good. If the players manage to do just that then Arsenal are guaranteed to leave the Carling Cup as the winners
of the tournament.
