Bubba Watson not willing to become the poster child of PGA
Bubba Watson says he is not interested in staying in the limelight; rather he would like to play good golf.
The longest hitter on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour spoke to the press about his image and golf on Wednesday, after attending a practice session of Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. The
American said that he was not interested in becoming the poster boy of the PGA Tour.
While speaking to reporters at a press conference after the practice session, Watson said, “I do have a pretty face, but I hope the Tour is not going to bank on me being their poster child.”
The three-time PGA Tour winner said that Association had been stuck in a trend to set one signature face of golf and then take it down after the player's decline in the sport. He mentioned Tiger Woods and
Phil Mickelson in this context and said that the two men were made the face of America, as they flooded billboards of all multinational companies, each banner and every other endorsement, but after they lost the charm; they were scratched off.
Watson stated, “I think it's going to be harder to dominate, like we used to see, like Tiger has dominated for so many years. I think it's going to be harder to have one guy stand out like that, because the talent is so much deeper
in each tournament that it's harder to dominate the whole world like that.”
Instead being sensationalized and given that extra hype, the American prefers to play good golf. He said he did not want to follow in the footsteps of legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, who are considered as the icons
of American golf.
This is the second time when Watson has diced Woods in his statement. Few days back, Watson was heard throwing harsh comments at Woods, encompassing his loss of direction and focus. Once again, the lefty
has engraved Woods in statements in a not so friendly way, but he does not accept that he is trying to cash in on cheap publicity.
Watson declined intentions to benefit from the statements, rather, he stated that he did not intend to insult one of the best golfers in the world. He further added that he knew he would not be able to match the legend created
by Woods until a miracle happens.
The winner of Zurich Classic and Farmer Insurance Open will be competing in the Crowne Plaza Invitational to set his foot onto the US Open, which is the next major of the season.
