  • Brescia versus Inter Milan – Serie A: Second Half Review (Part 2)

In the 62nd minute, Inter had a golden opportunity to add to their one goal advantage against Brescia at Stadio Mario Rigamonti. It was Giampaolo Pazzini who found himself clean through on goal for the Italian champions but the ex-Sampdoria striker was unable to find the back of the net with his finish due to diligent defensive pressure from Francesco Bega.

Inter gained confidence from Pazzini’s goal scoring opportunity and pushed forward once again in the 63rd minute. This time Goran Pandev and Maicon linked up brilliantly down the right hand side for the Nerazzurri. Inter Milan’s Brazilian full back squared the ball towards Pandev whose powerful shot towards Brescia’s goal was acrobatically tipped away by Michele Arcari as another chance went to waste for Leonardo’s men.

In the 65th minute, Inter choose to replace Lúcio with Ivan Cordoba. This substation was a straight swap as a central defender was replaced with another central defender. Soon after this change, Leonardo brought another change of the night for Inter as Pazzini was replaced by Houssine Kharja.

In the 70th minute, Wesley Sneijder had a brilliant opportunity to seal the win for his team but his shot towards Brescia’s goal, following an accurate pass from Maicon was saved by Arcari once again as the score remained at 1-0.

As the match went on, Inter began to descend into their defensive shell. Brescia gained more time and space on the ball in the middle of the park since the Nerazzurri adopted a deep defensive line to cater to Andrea Caracciolo’s pace.

In the 76th minute, Inter’s defensive line was further reinforced with the introduction of Marco Materazzi. The veteran Italian centre back replaced Yuto Nagamoto. In the 79th minute, Inter broke Brescia’s defensive resolve with their fast counter attack but in the end Pandev failed to break Arcari’s determination as the Brescia goalkeeper came flying out of his goal towards the Macedonian forward’s feet to gather the ball.

In the 82nd minute, Brescia finally got their equalizer. The home side benefitted from a long throw-in by Alessandro Diamanti. Ivan Cordoba misjudged the flight of the ball as he headed it back into his own penalty area. However, Caracciolo exhibited his predatory skills to the fullest extent, latching onto the loose ball and heading it home to bring the score line to 1-1 at the Stadio Mario Rigamonti.

Nonetheless, disaster struck for Inter Milan in the 88th minute as Ivan Cordoba brought down Eder inside Inter’s penalty area. The referee spotted the foul and brandished a red card for the Colombian defender and signalled a penalty kick for Brescia.

Caracciolo stepped up to take the spot kick but his ensuing shot was very weak as Julio Cesar guessed the flight of the ball for Inter Milan and in doing so, the Brazilian goalkeeper kept his team on level terms with the home side.

However, that was not the last controversial piece of action at Stadio Mario Rigamonti. In the 94th minute, Caracciolo was given his marching orders by the referee after kicking the ball away in frustration following his cynical challenge on Wesley Sneijder near the half way line. As a result, both teams ended the match with 10 men on the field. Regardless, Brescia and Inter Milan shared the spoils at the final whistle as the score line rested at 1-1.
