Australia Domestic: Tasmania v New South Wales - Sheffield Shield – Match Update

New South Wales 341/7d v Tasmania 81/0 (33.1 ov) - Tasmania trail by 260 runs with 10 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

On Tuesday, February 07, 2012 Tasmania ended the second day of the four-day contest against New South Wales by posting 81 runs without any loss in the ongoing Sheffield Shield tournament, at Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

Tasmania now trail by 260 runs with ten wickets in hand in their first innings in response to the first innings tally of 341 runs for seven wickets by their rivals New South Wales.

Earlier, Tasmanian openers Ed Cowan and Steven Cazzulino started the second day’s proceedings after ending the first day on a tally of 24.

Fans, however, couldn’t get to see much action as the day was heavily interrupted by rain.

Nonetheless, the batsmen stood their ground and prevented NSW bowlers from breaking the opening partnership as they batted well enough to take their side to 81 runs. However, play was then postponed due to consistent rain.

As of now, Tasmania are sitting at third place in the ongoing Sheffield Shield, while NSW are on fifth place.

For NSW, also known as the Blues, rain has hampered their chances of disgracing the resilient Tasmanian Tigers, as they lost the whole day which now means that they only have two more days to get their opponents bowled-out twice to secure a win in the match.

Meanwhile, NSW stole the show on the first day as their batsmen, who after being put into bat by Tasmania exhibited tremendous form to bolster a daunting total of 341 runs for the loss of seven wickets and then declared their innings to give their bowlers a chance to annihilated the Tigers.

From the Blues, Steven Smith, was the highest scorer after hammering a stupendous knock of 98 runs, while Ben Rohrer was the second most successful batsman in the first innings with 83 runs to his name.

Simon Katich, was the also looking in impressive form before he had to retire after amassing 46 runs.

NSW, exhibited the unparalleled strength in their middle-order as it played a vital role in helping the squad amass a stiff total.

With two days left, the game is evenly balanced and could go either way.
