Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie wants Gunners to take step forward next season

The Dutch international and Arsenal’s leading goal scorer, Robin Van Persie, has pleaded with the Gunners to take a final step forward to end their six-year trophy drought next season after going empty handed again this season.

It’s been a season of bitter disappointments for Arsene Wenger’s men, as they were once chasing four silverwares in February, but failed to capture any one of them.

Arsenal in their latest Premier League fixture, have defeated the mighty Manchester United 1-0 at Emirates Stadium. But this victory seems to have come far too late for them because taking only two points from the last nine points available have taken their title hopes far away from their reach.

This victory has helped Chelsea more than anybody, as Carlo Ancelotti’s men are now placed only three points shy of Manchester United. Arsenal’s victory could in the end prove to be a title blow defeat for the Men in Red.

The 27-year old, Van Persie, who has struck a staggering of 19 goals this season said “It is time to make that final step. We came so close a couple of times and achieved a [Carling Cup] final this year, but we need to play at least two or three finals and be involved in those circumstances”.

It has been a very unique season for Arsenal, as they were quite brilliant in defeating big shots such as, Manchester United, and, Chelsea, but have found it extremely difficult to cross the victory line whenever they took on the weaker opposition.

Despite the fact that Arsenal have been unbeaten in the last 16 games, playing too many draws and failing to earn a full three points against the weaker sides, such as Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, have cost them the prestigious Barclays Premier League title.

The former Feyenoord player, Persie spoke about their failure to bag full points against lesser teams, as he said “It makes it very frustrating. If you look back at a couple of games this year, like Sunday or against Chelsea, we didn't let these big games count because we dropped points against other teams”.

The Holland International has drawn a critical comparison between Manchester United’s ability to find themselves in the finals and Arsenal lack of skills to get to the finals. He said “If look at Manchester United, we can be better than them but they are [most likely] in the final of the Champions League, have a big chance of winning the Premier League and were in the semi final of the FA Cup”.

The matter of fact still remains, that Arsenal after coming so close to win trophies have faltered at crucial moments. They cruised into the Carling Cup final but failed to beat Birmingham City, then they received exit passes from Manchester United and Barcelona in the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League respectively, and ruined their desired Premier League destination badly this year.
