Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas revealed he had no plans to sign a new striker in the January transfer window despite Didier Drogba scheduled to leave for the African Cup of Nations in January.
Chelsea will be without three of their strikers as January approaches. Not only will Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou be away for the African Cup of Nations, the Blues have sold Nicolas Anelka which means the Frenchman will join Shanghai Shenhua in a permanent
move come the winter transfer window.
However, Villas-Boas retained his statement that the Blues would not be hunting for a striker in the January transfer window. So far the Blues have been linked with the likes of Eduardo Vargas, Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain.
The Portuguese remained adamant that Fernando Torres, Daniel Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku would be more than sufficient for the Blues to survive the tough winter period. The 34-year-old did not think the Blues were lacking in the goal scoring department as
compared to rivals Manchester City.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“Sometimes teams generate more goal scoring opportunities for certain people.
We are within Man City's range as the most attacking team. But we created for different players. That's why we have our goal sheet spread out through everybody, from (Frank) Lampard, to Sturridge, to Raul (Meireles), to (Juan) Mata.”
He was proud of the fact that the Blues had a wide range of players who acted as providers in scoring goals. As for Didier Drogba’s long term future, Villas-Boas revealed he was uncertain and that he was hopeful for the Ivory Coast international to return
to the club after the ACON.
“The African Nations terminates on February 12 and hopefully he'll return to the club. It's not up to me to speak about what is in Didier's mind at the moment regarding his future.”
