Ajax ace Gregory Van der Wiel attracting bids
Media reports suggest that Ajax full-back Gregory Van der Wiel could leave the club in the January transfer window. The final call, however, lies with Dutch giant Ajax and their decision whether they sell Luis Suarez to Liverpool.
Van der Wiel has been heavily linked to Chelsea, with the London Club ready to meet any evaluation set by Ajax, rumoured to be about €14 million. However, the Manchester United and Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly in the race to acquire
the services of the Dutchman.
The player has a long-term contract at Ajax and despite financial difficulties, the club does not wish to lose all their star names. They already have shipped out Urby Emanuelson, who joined Italian giants AC Milan. Meanwhile, Liverpool is in advance negotiations
regarding the signing of Luis Suarez.
“Anything can happen at the moment.” Hakim Slimani, the young right-back’s agent, told media representatives.
He went on to concede that there are a number of clubs monitoring him. He is the exceptional talent and would love to play abroad, but at the moment nothing rests with him. The main thing is that Ajax will have to make a decision about that.
There is no offer on the table. He still has five years remaining on his current deal, so it all depends on Ajax and whether they are willing to let him go. It also partially depends on Luis Suarez, whether or not he joins Liverpool.
Slimani hinted that the player might put a transfer request, “Then it is up to him and whether he wants to leave. So you never know, but we will see. But this is all speculation. I have not had any calls.”
Van der Wiel, 22, is one of the hottest prospects and already has established himself in the Dutch international set-up, starting two games at the 2010 World Cup.
The right-back has been at the centre of rumours regarding transfer to the Amsterdam-based club. Persistent reports suggested that the Dutch club is looking to cash in on their top talent due to financial difficulties.
