'Aguacerito' to sit on the sidelines
Current WBA lightweight champion Miguel 'Aguacerito' Acosta has cancelled a first title defense scheduled for September 25, 2010 due to back injury.
Acosta, who fights out of Venezuela, was scheduled to defend his title against Mexico’s Ricardo Dominguez in Mexico.
Professor Oscar Acosta, Miguel's manager and father, stated, "Since Saturday there was a problem, a pain that was treated. He was treated and re-evaluated on Tuesday, but definitely he cannot do anything. The doctor himself said it was not good to take risks and it was better to rest for at least a month.” Acosta stated that both he and son regretted the situation, and that they had “...made every effort to recover and be ready for the fight, but could not.”
“He said it is the left back muscle that is giving him problems,” stated Dr. Luis Miguel Gomez, who examined Acosta. It was the doctor’s final order that Acosta sit out for at least a month. There is speculation that the injury occured during training.
A replacement date for the fight has yet to be announced.
Acosta, (27-3, 21 KOs) knocked out Paulus Moses, who was undefeated at the time, to win the WBA title. The bout went six rounds at the Kalahari Sands Hotel in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Acosta had the support of the embassy of Venezuela, who appeared ringside.
