AFC Ajax Amsterdam vs. Vitesse Arnhem: Janssen and Bony to shine – Dutch Eredivisie preview
It will be an exciting battle between Ajax Amsterdam and Vitesse Arnhem, when the two sides lock horn at Amsterdam Arena on Friday, August 26.
The Amsterdammers started their title defence in style, securing all three points in their opening two encounters of the season. However, they failed to dominate proceedings in Venlo last weekend. De Joden currently sit second in the league table, having
acquired seven points from three matches.
The Amsterdam giants are coming into this match on the back of a demoralising 2-2 stalemate against VVV-Venlo at De Koel Stadion last week. The Amsterdammers staged a below par show and were lucky at the end to secure a lone point.
Frank de Boer, De Joden head coach, would be hoping that his side stages a good show in front of their home crowd and manage to bag all three points. The Dutch trainer praised Vitesse and revealed that he is looking forward to tough competition from John
van den Brom’s side.
“They have started the season very well. The coaching skills of John van den Brom are visible. I am curious to face them on Friday and see what happens”, De Boer said while talking to the media.
The Vitas are coming into this match on the back of a morale boosting 2-1 win over FC Utrecht at GelreDome Stadion. The outfit from Arnhem dominated proceedings at home and secured all three points by the end of the 90 minutes.
FC Hollywood aan de Rijn finished 15th in the league table last term. However, the way the outfit from Arnhem have started the new season, it seems like that they would be competing for silverware by the end of the 2011/12 campaign.
Merab Jordania took control of the financially troubled club in August 2010. Jordania expressed his ambition to forge the Eredivisie outfit into a force to be reckoned with in Netherlands. His objective is to win the Eredivisie in the upcoming three years.
Although they have impressed many in Netherlands, Jordania’s side still have to go a long way to go before they win silverware.
Ajax have been the superior side in the last five head-to-head encounters against Vitesse. The Amsterdam giants have won four while Vitas secured all three points in the remaining fixture.
Players to watch
Theo Janssen – Ajax Amsterdam
The Dutch International will again be the main source of inspiration for the hosts. The 30-year-old would be controlling the flow of the match from the centre of the field while providing valuable assists and goalscoring opportunities for fellow teammates.
He will surely play an important part should the Amsterdammers bags maximum points.
Wilfried Bony – Vitesse Arnhem
Since his arrival at GelreDome Stadion earlier this year, the 22-year-old has proved his worth upfront by scoring six goals in only 10 appearances. The Ivorian ace always brings his best performances against big-name oppositions and will surely relish the
opportunity to prove himself against the Amsterdam giants.
The head-to-head statistics make the Amsterdammers clear favourites to bag all three points on their home turf. The match will end 3-1 win in favour of the hosts.
