2011 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships: Quarterfinalists - Part II

The 2011 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, as explained in the first part of this recap, is one of the most important ATP Tour events. It is an ATP World Tour 500 series tournament, worth $1,100,000.

The first part of this recap covered three American quarterfinalists; Mardy Fish, Robert Kendrick and Michael Russell. Part II will attempt to provide readers with a succinct review of three more players who have made it through to the quarterfinals of this event.

Andy Roddick

World Number 8 Andy Roddick is one of the eight Americans who took part in this year’s Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. This is a particularly significant event for Roddick, who will lift his 30th ATP Tour title trophy if he wins the final match. The 28-year-old player achieved his greatest result in 2003, when he won the US Open title.

Seeded first at Memphis, Roddick played his first match against Lithuanian player Richard Berankis. The American player took three sets to defeat Berankis, ultimately winning the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

He then faced Serbian tennis player Janko Tipsarevic, who ousted American qualifier Ryan Sweeting in straight sets in the first round. Roddick defeated Tipsarevic in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(8).

This victory has catapulted him to the quarterfinals of the event, where he will face Australian Number 1, Lleyton Hewitt.

Sam Querrey

Sam Querrey, who hails from Las Vegas, is another one of the eight American players in this tournament. He broke into the Top 20 ATP Players earlier this year, and is currently ranked World Number 17. The 23-year-old player’s best results came at Wimbledon and the US Open, where he has made it to the fourth round on three different occasions.

Querrey is seeded fifth at the Memphis event, and drew Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the first round of the tournament. He defeated the player in a grueling tie-breaker, winning the match in three sets 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4.

He qualified for the second round with this victory, and was scheduled to play against Argentine Brian Dabul. Dabul defeated Polish tennis pro Michal Przysiezny in the first round. However, the American successfully defeated him in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(3).

Sam Querrey will now compete in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships against fourth seed and compatriot Mardy Fish.

Lleyton Hewitt

Lleyton “Rusty” Hewitt is currently Australia’s Number 1 player. Currently ranked World Number 68 on the ATP Rankings, the 29-year-old reached his peak around ten years ago. He won two Grand Slam titles, lifting trophies at the 2001 US Open and the 2002 Wimbledon Championships. He also reached the final of the 2005 Australian Open.

Hewitt’s first round match at the Memphis event was against Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu, whom he defeated in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(3). This victory helped him to proceed to the second round of the tournament.

The former World Number 1 faced tennis pro Adrian Mannarino in the next round, after the French player defeated Czech qualifier Jan Hajek 6-2, 6-2 in the first round.

Hewitt managed to defeat Mannarino 6-7(9), 7-5, 6-0 to set up a quarterfinal match with first seed Andy Roddick.

Part III of this recap will cover wildcards Milos Raonic and Juan Martin Del Potro.
