2011 BNP Paribas Open – ATP Seeds Part XIV: Viktor Troicki

World Number 18 Viktor Troicki

Viktor Troicki is currently the second-highest ranked Serbian tennis player on the Association of Tennis Professionals, bringing up the rear as World Number 18. The player, who is 25 years old, has been playing tennis as a pro since 2006. His current ranking is also his highest ranking yet, achieved earlier this year in February. The right-handed pro is currently coached by Jan de Witt. The Serbian pro won his first ATP title in 2010, defeating Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals and Marcos Baghdatis in the final to win the Kremlin Cup. His most significant achievement to date is his victory at the deciding rubber of last year’s Davis Cup match between France and Serbia.

Troicki has participated at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells thrice before, making his debut on the courts of California in 2007. He was ranked World Number 177 at the time, and cleared two qualifying rounds only to be defeated in three sets by Arnaud Clement in the first round of the main draw.

His run at the event was much more successful next year, when he was ranked World Number 41. Although unseeded, he gained direct entry into the main draw and faced Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the first round. The Serbian tennis pro was already leading with one set, when the Russian player dropped out of the match. In the next round, he defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets to set up a third round meeting with David Nalbandian. The Argentine ended his run at the tournament in straight sets.

Viktor Troicki was exceptionally lucky in his last showing at the tournament, in 2010. He was World Number 35 at the time, and received a bye into the second round due to his high ranking. His first round match was against Uruguay’s Pablos Cuevas; however, Troicki only played one game before Cuevas retired from the match. His next meeting was against then-World Number 6 Nikolay Davydenko, who withdrew from the tournament on short notice. Therefore, Troicki managed to make it all the way to the fourth round of the Indian Wells tournament without actually playing a single set. He was ousted by current World Number 7 Tomas Berdych in straight sets.

This year, Viktor Troicki is seeded 16th at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. He received a bye in the first round, and began his campaign in the second round against Australian wildcard Bernard Tomic. Tomic was defeated by the Serbian player in straight sets, leading Troicki to set up a third-round match against French pro Michael Llodra. Llodra is seeded 24th at the event, and defeated Columbian pro Santiago Giraldo to reach the third round of the Indian Wells event.
